Peeks the party people have seen a massive rise in sales of their Japanese products after the country’s unfancied rugby team sensationally beat mighty South Africa.
The victory at the Rugby World Cup was the biggest upset in the sport’s history and the plucky underdogs have now become everyone’s favourite second team.
And that has led to a spike in sales for Japanese products at Peeks, one of the biggest party supply companies in the country.
Its vast party store in Christchurch, Dorset, and its website immediately saw a rush on Japanese flags, sumo suits, ninja outfits, and Japan-themed rosettes, fans and mobiles.
Some lines sold out as new fans of the Cherry Blossoms looked to show their support for the mighty minnows.
Nick Peek, MD of Peeks, said: “We saw a positive increase in sales following Japan’s amazing win.
“Japan flags and table flags were flying off the shelves.
“We certainly love an underdog in Britain and the Japanese were heroes to a man and people just want to show their support and appreciation.
“The unscripted drama of sport makes it so thrilling and results like the Japanese victory over South Africa can really galvanise people.
“Whatever happens in the rest of the tournament Japan will go home proud.
“We have plenty of stock for the Rugby World Cup, but like everyone else never anticipated a Japan victory over South Africa.”
The match played in Brighton saw twice world cup winners South Africa humbled in the group match against Japan, whose last win in the competition was 24 years ago.
The thrilling final move of the match saw the Cherry Blossoms score the winning try – sending the crowd into a state of joy.
Victory also saw the official Rugby World Cup store in London close its doors temporarily following a rush by Japanese fans.
