Why have a Street Party?
- To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and join in the great British tradition. It’s a four day Bank Holiday Celebration from 2nd to 5th June – time off work, time to PARTY!!!
- Everyone is so busy these days we don’t get a chance to meet and chat with neighbours. A street party is a great chance to build a friendly community.
- To raise money for local charities by having a raffle on the day.
- Kids can play safely for a change with no cars and the adults will be close by.
- The street is the best and most convenient place to meet as it is right outside your house.
- You will all have fun no matter what your age!!
How do we organise it?
- Knock on your neighbours doors and ask them if they’re willing to get involved.
- Put together an invitation to post through doors with your contact name, address and phone number on so that your neighbours can contact you with ideas etc
- Hold a meeting to discuss when, where and at what time the party should start and finish.
- Contact your local council to request that your road be closed for that day. Councils vary a lot in what arrangements they require. The council, or you, will have to consult the fire, ambulance and police. Ask well in advance as this procedure can take at least 4 weeks to complete.
- Compile a list of items needed for the day and ask neighbours to tick off what they will be bringing.
- Ask everyone to put £2 - £5 into a kitty to pay for things like cups, plates and decorations – see pages 24 to 29 of our themes catalogue. Any left over funds could be donated to charity or spent on food for the day.
What will we need?
- Tables and chairs – kitchen chairs, deckchairs, stools, most people will have at least one or two chairs they could bring along. Make sure there are enough comfortable chairs with cushions for elderly residents. Wall paper pasting tables and kitchen tables are ideal. See our range of table covers at www.peeks.co.uk and turn to page 28 of our Themes Catalogue to see our great Party Tent and Gazebo.
- Paper cups and plates – see our Union Jack plates, cups, sandwich and cupcake stands with napkins to match on page 29 of the 2012 themes catalogue or visit www.peeks.co.uk
- Bunting – no party is complete without bunting! We have exclusive Diamond Jubilee 5.5m bunting, Union Jack bunting and plain red, white and blue available on pages 24 and 25 of our Themes catalogue. Tie from lamppost to lamppost from one side of the road to the other and from gate posts and fences.
- Balloons – kids love balloons! Our disposable helium cylinders are safe and simple to use and will inflate approximately 50 latex balloons. Allocate two adults to fill and tie balloons. See page 26 for information on balloons, tape and helium.
- Party hats – We have a great selection of headwear on page 27 including mini Union Jack Plastic Hats, Head Boppers, Bowler hats, Fun Hats, Cowboy Hats…...there’s something for everyone!!
- Games – traditional outdoor games such as the egg & spoon race, sack race and hook a duck are always lots of fun and enjoyed by all ages. Please see our fundraising catalogue or visit www.peeks.co.uk for more ideas. Give younger children chalk to decorate the pavements! You may even like to organise a ‘Mini Olympic Games’ in preparation for the games in July – see our Olympic Games range on pages 30 and 31.
- Raffle tickets and a raffle prize with proceeds going to local charities. Ask local businesses to donate prizes. Our Corgi with Cape & Crown Soft Toy on page 25 makes an ideal raffle prize! Raffle tickets are best sold on the day so remind residents to bring some change with them.
- A camera to capture the memories of what will be a fantastic day! Set up a residents Facebook group to download pictures for all to see and give people a chance to write a comment about their day.
Have fun; enjoy your day and fingers crossed for good weather!!
